Venezuela is facing tough times with the coronavirus outbreak as the contagion has picked up more pace than ever before.
Over the past few days, COVID-19 cases have reached their highest daily average in Venezuela. The socialist-ruled nation, which is enduring a ferocious US sanctions regime that has severely stricken its oil-based economy, is seeing over 400 citizens getting infected with the virus by the day, while more than 12,000 people have already fallen ill.
Pundits say these are high figures for a 30-million-strong population, and they seemingly tend to go even higher.
For this reason, President Nicolas Maduro decreed a nationwide lockdown this week, as part of government efforts to slow down the spread of the virus. The socialist leader has slammed the US over holding onto the economic sanctions against Venezuela despite the coronavirus pandemic, which has struck the entire world.
Members of the ruling party back Maduros position. In turn, the opposition attempts to justify the US sanctions despite the ongoing COVID-19 crisis.
US sanctions have hindered Venezuelas struggle against the outbreak. As contagion numbers rise, Venezuelans can only hope the government-decreed lockdown can flatten the curve.
